Tim's math test results are 68, 72, 78, 80 and 86.  Question: What grade must he obtain on his next test to get his average exactly to 75?  Answer: 66 How to: 75 x 6 = 450  68+72+78+80+86 = 384. 450-384 = 66 on his last test. - Thelma picks 3 bushels of apples in 8 minutes. Louise picks 4 bushels of apples in 10 minutes.  Question: How many bushels can they pick in 1 minute ? Answer: 0.775 How to: Thelma picks 3/8 of a bushel in 1 minute. Louise picks 4/10 of a bushel in 1 minite. Together they pick 3/8 + 4/10 = 30/80 + 32/80 = 62/80 Therefore they pick 0.775 of a bushel in one minute. - Twenty-four children play basketball during a thirty-six minute gym period. Only ten students can play at the same time; Each boy plays the same length of time. Question: How many minutes does each student play basketball? Answer: 15 minutes each How to: Total floor minutes: 36 minutes x 10 students at a time = 360   24 students play basketball. Each student gets 320/24 = 15 minutes each. - Fifty persons attend a meeting. 38 have brown hair. 29 have brown eyes. 23 have both brown hair and brown eyes.  Question: How many have neither brown hair nor brown eyes? Answer: 6 How to: 38-23 = 15 with brown hair but not brown eyes. 29-23 = 6 people with brown eyes but not brown hair. 23 + 15 + 6 = 44 people with something brown. Therefore: 50-44 = 6 with neither brown hair or eyes. - Four typists type a total of 600 letters in 3 days. Question: Knowing that each typist types the same number each day, how many letters can two typists type in one day? Answer:  100 How to: One typist types 600/4 = 150 letters in 3 days; One typist can type  150/3 = 50 letters in 1 day.  Therefore: Two typists can type 100 letters in 1 day.
