Collect mail order catalogs from as many
sources as possible.
Invite
students, in pairs, to browse through them.
Tell students that they each have an
imaginary $200 to spend on catalog items.
Encourage some socializing in the groups so enthusiasm for
the lesson can build while the hunt for "wishes" proceeds.
Let students decide on individual purchases
within the defined limits.
Distribute duplicates of a standard order
blank, with spaces designated for the name and address of the sender, the
catalog item number, the name of the merchandise, the unit price, quantity
desired, total price, tax, shipping charge and the grand total.
When computations have been checked, children
cut out the illustrations and descriptions of their ordered items and paste them
on sheets of drawing paper.
These can be collected into a "Class Wish
Book" to glance through on dreary winter days.
