Now cross out all numbers that are in the horizontal and vertical columns of your selected number.
Circle the last remaining number

Explanation:
The square is an addition table arranged in a different way.
The table is generated by two sets of numbers:
horizontally :12, 1, 4, 18, 0
vertically 7, 0, 4, 9, 2.
The sum of these numbers is 57.

How the numbers in the cells are determined:
Write the first set of numbers horizontally below the top row of the square.
Write the second set vertically in the last column,.
The number in the first cell (top row, first column) is the sum of 12  and 7, and so on through the square.
Each number in the square represents the sum of a pair of numbers in the two generating sets.
